Once upon a time I had a Tahoe, which I loved. However when gas was on the rise, once it hit $2.77 a gallon I traded it in for a fully loaded Honda Civic. My car payment went down about $50 a month but my gas dropped a LOT. I went from $66 a week to $33 every week and a half.
Now I really like my Honda, it is fast, auto, a/c, GPS (which as most of you I can't live without!) ect so while the payments were lower then the Tahoe they weren't cheap.
Then Last year my wages were reduced 10%, we have worked thru that reduction, but know my husband who makes wayyyy more then me is facing a 15% wage reduction, sooo we have to reduce our bills even more.
I made a spreadsheet up showing my monthly payments and what the end result cost would be afer 3 years (I financed my car for 6) and then added all the leases going on currently (3 year lease to match the 3 years left on my car) and low and behold, I am saving... ready for this... $123 a month by switching to the Mini Cooper!
It is amazing the things I am willing to do for the family budget! It was a hard thing but someone has to do it!
The Mini does have Bluetooth, (which the Honda didn't) but it doesn't have built in GPS which the Honda did, so we got a Garman that shows traffic on it so I am going to stop driving the toll roads on the days the traffic seems ok, this should save us another $100 or more a month!
With another wage cut looming it is time to get creative to lower our "nut". At least occasionally something good comes out of it (like a Mini Cooper! Light blue, which the family calls the Smurfmobile!)
